There are few sports like waterfowling. The punishment we inflict on ourselves can sometimes boggle the mind. Thoughts of nasty weather, sleeplessness, and physical demands frighten most ordinary folks. It is no wonder most outsiders think we're nuts.
And we have probably admitted at least once to ourselves that we have a "sickness." It's hard to explain to others when we barely understand it ourselves, yet each year, like clockwork and without warning, our minds start to drift towards the approaching waterfowl season.
As opening day nears, we can barely contain our excitement. And after the first shot is fired, it's on. Each hunt thereafter is an adventure and when everything comes together it's magical. It's hard to put into words how we feel after a great duck or goose hunt, but we all know the feeling. And even though the day in the field was super already, harvesting a duck or goose sporting a bird band can make the hunt that much sweeter.
When you think about it, the waterfowl band itself is an oddity. It's just a chunk of metal with some characters stamped on it. In most situations, such an object would hardly warrant attention, but because they are a part of our sport they represent something more.
Why does the little trinket interest us at all? Is it the randomness of the event, like playing the lottery? Or is it something else? Like thinking about the bird's history and the travels it has made with band in tow. Or is a waterfowl band similar to a photo, in that it too takes a "snapshot " in time of one of the many moments during a waterfowler's long hunting career. Do we really know? Maybe not, but in any event we do know this; duck and goose bands are fun to get while we pursue the sport we love.
