222 Bird Bands and Counting

New Jersey - George Horvath

Here is a picture of my 222nd bird band that I got in New Jersey. It was from New Brunswick, Canada.

I am retired and fish or hunt almost every day in NJ in the afternoon on public land, having hunted a total of 43 years.

Here you can hunt waterfowl from September 1 through March 10, and I have hunted as many as 84 times in a season.

I have shot banded waterfowl in NJ each of the past 37 consecutive waterfowl seasons. Twice I shot 13 banded waterfowl in a single year.

My northernmost band was from a greater snow goose from Axel Heiberg Island near the North Pole, southernmost band was an American black duck from New Bern, North Carolina, westernmost band was a redhead from Meota, Saskatchewan, and my easternmost band was an American black duck from Searston, Newfoundland.

I have also retrieved 15 goose neck collars, four reward bands, a nasal saddle, a color coded leg band, and a transmitter.
