It was the 2008 opener of the New Jersey duck season and my hunting buddies and I headed out to one of our favorite spots.
We set up our blind, applied our camouflage face paint, placed our decoy spread, loaded our shotguns, and got ready for a great day of hunting.
This was just my third time waterfowl hunting though I have been a hardcore deer hunter. It was one of my buddies that talked me into hunting ducks.
About an hour into our hunt, two mallards flew by and eyed our spread, then came around for another look. I guess they liked what they saw as they decided to set down in the dekes. A moment before they touched down, my buddy gave the "kill'em" signal and I opened fire on the mallard hen. One shot, one kill.
My third buddy took his canoe out and scooped up the bird. When he got back to shore he was shaking his head.
I said, "What's up?"
He then handed me my duck and I saw not one, but two bands on her. Not only did she have a silver band on her, she also had a green reward band for $100.00! Not bad for my first waterfowl kill ever!
