The Perfect Hunt Initiative™ emerged from our field experiences and discussions with skilled duck and goose hunters from around the country.
The goal is to bring a focused awareness to the waterfowling community about what is possible while in the field during a duck or goose hunt. There are waterfowlers that already know what is possible. They have experienced it, and continue to live it.
There are other duck or goose hunters that have yet to witness the possibilities for a number of reasons. We might use the analogy of the aspiring race car driver that loves to fly down country roads in his private vehicle to illustrate the point.
The drivers motivation is evident, and he has some aptitude, but he has yet to discover the technical nuances of racing on the oval track. If this future racer with the raw talent was armed with the right instruction though, he too could excel at his sport.
An additional supportive goal of the Perfect Hunt Initiative™ is to promote best of practice hunting skills to help make duck and goose hunting a quality experience for all. Even duck and goose hunters that have dialed in their hunts can benefit from a refresher from time to time. And of course, for those waterfowlers just learning to hunt, having a solid reference tool is invaluable. Might we suggest you explore the Field Etiquette HuntGuide™ as a resource. check it out...
The Perfect Hunt
Duck and goose hunting is no different than any other sport such as baseball, football, or golf. Within these sports, there are participants with varying levels of skill, and of course, the top world athletes are recognized for their amazing abilities. Just as the pitcher strives to throw a perfect 27 pitch game against the team's arch rival, the quarterback attempts to complete each pass against the toughest defense in the league, or the golfer toils to finish a grueling course under par, there are waterfolwers that strive to achieve comparable results in their sport too. They may attempt to fill their bags with as few shots as possible, kill all decoyed birds with their feet down at 15 yards, or harvest a game strap heavy with a specific species of duck or goose. Similar to other highly trained athletes seeking their perfect game, these duck and goose hunters strive for their objective too, the Perfect Hunt™.
An alternative way to explore the concept of the Perfect Hunt is to look to the hunting community itself. If you had an opportunity at a trophy elk, you would surely understand at that definitive moment when you pulled the trigger that you would most likely only have one clean shot at that monster animal sighted at the end of your barrel. And of course, prior to the hunt, you would of done everything within your means to prepare for the moment. At the decisive second, your success would boil down to preparation.
There is no doubt that achieving the pinnacle of success in any sport involves a number of factors, sometimes including luck, but there is one issue that is clear. Top athletes continually practice and hone their skills to prepare for success. They stack the odds in their favor for the inevitable - when their performance meets opportunity. There are waterfowlers that have fine tuned their game too, and by all rights, if their refined skills were in another sport such as baseball or hockey they would be well known superstars. Unfortunately, the waterfowling sport does not attract the level of media coverage other sports do, but if it did garner similar attention, waterfowling stories such as the following would be common in the media. The event was shared by Mark DesRoches from Ontario, Canada and illustrates the application of fine tuned hunting skills. His story is great on several levels. read more...
