Up for grabs is an all black acrylic Tule Short Barrel, double reed timber call from Sutter Basin Duck Calls located in Yuba City, CA. The call is finished with a stainless band. The random drawing details follow.

About the Duck Call

The area known as the Sutter Basin is well known for it's diverse habitat of natural wetlands and cultivated rice, and includes the Federally owned Sutter National Wildlife Refuge. The duck and goose hunting there can be outstanding given the right conditions.

Gene Carter, the founder and owner of Sutter Basin Duck Calls, sent us this beautiful call for the Giveaway.

To be honest, it had been some time since we had blown a double reed mallard call, so we weren't quite sure what to expect.

To take the photo, we took a short trip to a nearby marsh that developed from an old oxbow that was once part of a river that still runs through town. There are some resident waterfowl there, but we also see a fair number of migratory birds, primarily mallard and wood duck, that annually use the area. Almost like clock work, the ducks depart in the early morning, and return each afternoon to roost for the night.

Though our primary focus was to snap a few photos of Gene's call that afternoon, how could a duck hunter in the marsh with duck call in hand resist the opportunity to give the call a run. You guessed it, we couldn't.

The call ran smooth. It felt familiar, almost like a single reed, but not quite the same. As for tone, the ducks within ear shot loved it. With just a little calling from both ends of the spectrum, quiet and soft to loud and aggressive, we soon had mallards swimming and flying to us to investigate.
